The closest that roses came to this color in nature were from plants that have been hybrids developed by scientists. These scientists spent a great deal of time and money to make new types of roses. The roses that the scientists developed were really more lilac in color than blue. In the recent past, some scientists have used new methods to develop blue roses. The scientists used genetic engineering to make these roses.

Although the real ones are hard to find, blue roses appear from the creations of different artists. These artists use their paints and palettes to put these very different roses into paintings and porcelain. The artists create wallpapers filled with blue roses that will fit into many different decors. There are plates and cups made from porcelain that have these beautiful roses as part of the designs. These artists often create wonderful designs that are often combined with other things that might not appear blue in the real world.

A widely acclaimed play by Tennessee Williams, one of the great playwrights of American literature, is centered on a disabled girl named Laura. She retreats from the world because of her disability, but one evening she entertains an old acquaintance from high school days who remembers her as related to blue roses. When the two were in high school, Laura told her classmate that she had a disease called pleurosis. He thought she said blue roses and remembered her from this exchange. Blue roses were similar to Laura in that the blue roses and Laura were very different. Blue roses are not common and Laura was a very unusual young woman.

Laura rarely ventured into the real world because of her disability. Her mother was very disappointed in her daughter because she could not hold a job or socialize with other people. The mother saw herself as very important and sought after by male suitors. She had her hopes set on the boy from Laura's past who remembered her disease as if she were talking about these very unusual roses. When the young man finally comes to dinner, Laura cannot cope with someone from the outside world because she just does not fit in. The young man eventually leaves the home and never returns. Laura is left alone unlike other girls her age. She is very different like blue roses.
